Barkerville, BC
Barkerville sprouted up after prospector Billy Barker found gold at Williams Creek in 1852 and began the Cariboo Gold Rush. In its prime, Barkerville was the largest city west of Chicago and North of San Francisco. In 1957, the BC Government decided to restore Barkerville to its glory through a project celebrating the province’s 1958 centennial. Over 125 heritage buildings were restored and are now open for visitor to wander through and daydream of a time over 130 years ago.
Barkerville is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day year round. Full visitor services are available mid-May through to mid-September and admission fees are in effect throughout that time.
Barkerville is located on Highway 26, 86 km (53.5 mi.) east of Quesnel. Commercial flights go into the Quesnel Airport.
